Biographical notes:

Major, Fourth Michigan Cavalry Robert H. G. Minty was born Dec. 4, 1831 in County Mayo, Ireland; served under his father a ensign in the British army, 1849-53, in Africa, Honduras, and the West Indies. Came to Michigan in 1853, and during the Civil War was commissioned major of Second Michigan Cavalry, Sept.. 2, 1861; lieutenant colonel of the Third, Nov. 1, 1861, and colonel of the Fourth, July 21, 1862. From Dec. 23, 1862 to September, 1864 he commanded the First Brigade (known as the Sabre Brigade) of the First Division. He led a division in Kilpatrick's raid on Atlanta, and was promoted to brigadier general of Volunteers in 1865. He participated in the capture of Jefferson Davis and the latter's confinement in Fortress Monroe. He was brevetted brigadier general and major general of U.S.Volunteers, Mar. 13, 1865, and mustered out, Aug. 15, 1865. After the war he became manager of the Elizabethtown & Paducah Railroad lived in Elizabethtown, Ky. He married twice, the second time Laura Abbott May 14, 1871. He died in Jerome, Ariz., Aug. 24, 1906. According to another source, there are confusing circumstances surrounding his marriages to Grace and Laura, as there was never a legal divorce decree granted to disolve Minty's marriage from Grace.
