Biography

Thomas Caddell was born in Bristol, England, in 1742; apprenticed to London bookseller and publisher Andrew Millar, 1758; became Millar's partner in 1765 and took over business in 1767; published Gibbon and Blackstone and was an original member of famous dining club of booksellers which met monthly at Shakespeare Tavern; retired in 1793 and died in 1802; succeeded by his son, Thomas Cadell (1773-1836); Cadell the elder chose William Davies as Cadell the younger's partner, and the firm was named Cadell & Davies until Davies' death in 1819; the business published the 4th to 8th editions of Boswell's Life of Johnson and continued until the younger Cadell's death in 1836.
