Biographical notes:

Brothers-in-law Dan Root and Herman Brown founded Brown and Root, Inc. in 1919 as a road-building company by brothers-in-law Dan Root and Herman Brown. In the following decades the company expanded into larger industrial construction projects including offshore oil platforms and dams. In the 1960s Brown and Root, Inc. was purchased by the Haliburton Company. Haliburton merged Brown and Root with the M.W. Kellogg Company in the 1990s to form Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR).
