Elizabeth George Speare was born November 21, 1908, in Melrose, MA, and died November 15, 1994, in Tucson, AZ. She was an educator and author, remembered for her historical novels for children. In 1958, she published The Witch of Blackbird Pond, for which she won the Newbery Medal. She also received a Newbery Medal for The Bronze Bow, plus numerous other honors and awards.
