University of Minnesota. Special Counseling Office.

Biographical notes:

Previous to 1941, disciplinary cases involving University students were handled by various faculty committees and administrators. In 1941, the Board of Regents centralized the administration of student affairs, including discipline, into a single office.

The Disciplinary Counseling Office was administered by the Office of the Dean of Students with John D. Foley as the Senior Student Counselor. He was succeeded by Walter C. Jewell from 1949-1954 when LeVerne F. Snoxell became the director and served until 1978.

In 1971, the office was renamed the Special Counseling Office to reflect its broad scope of consultation and to soften the negative image of the term disciplinary. In 1991, it was again renamed Student Judicial Affairs Office.
