Biographical notes:

Ohio-born doctor and educator, moved to San Francisco in 1862 where he attended Toland Medical College. He then went to Los Angeles, where he became the city's first health officer; joined his brother (Judge Robert M. Widney) in founding the University of Southern California, of which he became the second president; and, as a civic leader, worked to develop San Pedro as the city's harbor. [Hart, Companion to California.] At various times served as President of the Los Angeles Board of Education and of the Los Angeles County Medical Association.
