Biographical notes:

L.F. Detwiller was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. He obtained a B.A. in Economics and Government from the University of British Columbia in 1939 and an M.A. in 1940. He then enlisted in the RCAF where he served until 1945. After lecturing for a year at UBC, he joined the provincial civil service in 1946 as a research statistician. He served the government in a variety of capacities before leaving in 1955 to undertake formal training in hospital administration at the University of Minnesota. He returned to B.C. to assume the position of Assistant Deputy Minister of Hospital Insurance. In 1962, Detwiller left the government service to become administrator of the UBC Health Sciences Centre, a position which he held until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement, he continued to serve the UBC Health Sciences Centre Hospital as an unpaid but active consultant. He also served as secretary to the Board of Manangement of the Imaging Research Centre which he had helped to establish. Detwiller lectured extensively on medical economics in Canada and the United States for a variety of universities and professional institutions.
