Hobart Muir Smith (1912-) was born on September 26, 1912, in Stanwood, Iowa. He attended Kansas State University, studying entomology, and Kansas University for his masters on Amphibians. After earning his Ph.D. in lizards (genus Sceloporus), he completed post-doctoral work at University of Michigan on "biogeographic summary of the snakes of North America." Smith spent considerable time throughout his studies and field work in North America and Mexico. He collected specimens, documented in the Division of Mammals, National Museum of Natural History, in conjunction with the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship.
