On March 16, 1803, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was chosen as one of the fifteen members of the Chamber of Commerce as reinstituted by the First Counsul. At its first meeting on April 7, 1803 he was chosen as secretary. On June 10, 1807 Du Pont became vice president and held this position until he retired in April 1810. During this period Du Pont was primarily concerned with financial questions and tariff legislation. In 1804 he and two other members were called upon to draft a commercial code. They suggested that legislation be adopted to permit the chartering of limited liability corporations. They drafted recommendations for the establishment of stock exchange, and were involved in negotiating an 1807 commercial treaty with Russia.
