Biographical notes:
Samuel Slater (1768-1835), in connection with Moses Brown, established the first cotton mill in the United States in 1791 in Pawtucket, R.I. He was subsequently joined by his brother John Slater (1776-1843). They established a series of cotton and woolen mills in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut which were continued by their descendants.
