Harry Darby (1895-1987), senator from Kansas was born in Kansas City, Kansas. He attended the public schools there and later graduated from the University of Illinois (1917 and 1929). During the World War I, Darby served in the United States Army from 1917 to 1919, attaining the rank of captain. He later became an industrialist and farmer-stockman with business interests in railroads, steel, banking, insurance, retail sales, and utility companies. He served as chairman of the state highway commission from 1933 to 1937, and was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Clyde M. Reed. He served in the Senate from December 2, 1949, to November 28, 1950, a successor having been elected. After his time in the Senate, he resumed business and other political activities, and was a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, until his death.
