Biographical notes:
The Alembic Club was established by a group of students and young graduates at Oxford in 1901, and was a very active academic society for more than 50 years. Its weekly lectures and discussions were attended by undergraduates and senior members of the University, and frequently addressed very up-to-date topics in chemistry and physics. The originator of the Club is thought to have been W. M. Hooton, a mathematician; the first President was G. W. F. Holroyd; and active early members included Bertram Lambert, H. G. J. Moseley, N. V. Sidgwick, Sir H. T. Tizard, and A. F. Walden. It ceased to meet regularly in the 1960s.
