Sam Woolford was a journalist for the San Antonio Light from 1919 to 1950, serving as Sunday editor and city editor. From 1955 to 1975, the Light published a weekly column on Texas life and history, Woolford's Tales, for which Mr. Woolford is best known. Mr. Woolford's wife Bess, also a writer, is known for her history of the Witte Museum, among other works. They shared an interest in Texas history and culture. They wrote both jointly and independently on the subject and acquired a large collection of Texana.
