McKinnon, James W., 1932-1999

James W. McKinnon (1932-1999) was an American musicologist known for his contributions to the study of Western plainchant, medieval and renaissance music, Latin liturgy, and music iconography. He published more than 100 articles in music journals and reference books; authored several books including The Temple, The Church Fathers, and Early Western Chant, and The Advent Project: The Later Seventh-Century Creation of the Roman Mass Proper; and edited collections including Source Readings in Music History and Music in Early Christian Literature. McKinnon was born in Niagara Falls, NY, in 1932. He received a BA in classical languages from Niagara University and a PhD in musicology from Columbia University. He joined the faculty at University at Buffalo in 1966 and remained through 1989, serving as acting music department chair from 1968-70 and from 1980-81, and as music department chair from 1987-89. From the mid-1960s to 1988, he also served as church organist and choirmaster at St. John's-Grace Episcopal Church in Buffalo. In 1989 he was appointed Richard H. Fogel Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a position he held until his death in 1999.
