Biographical notes:

The American Lutheran Church (ALC) was formed in 1930 by a merger of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio and Other States, the Synod of the Lutheran Church Emigrated From Prussia (Buffalo Synod), the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Iowa and Adjacent States, and the First Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Texas. A constitution and by-laws for the ALC was first created in 1926 by the merger Joint Commission. The commission recommended a consummation of the union in 1928, but the Iowa Synod demanded a change in a statement regarding the ALC's ascription to the inerrancy to the Scriptures in the confessional paragraph of the new constitution.

Settlement of the working of the statement in 1928 and 1929 finally paved the way for the 1930 merger.
