William Harvey served as bosun's mate in HMS Resolute on the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition, 1850-1851 (leader Horatio Austin), instructed to search for Franklin's missing expedition by way of Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound. He returned to the Arctic on the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition, 1852-1854 (leader William Pullen), as boatswain's mate in HMS North Star, the store ship for the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition, 1852-1854 (leader Sir Edward Belcher). In August 1853, Harvey transferred to the supply ship HMS Phoenix, which had arrived at Beechey Island with more supplies for Belcher's squadron, and returned to England. He was later appointed chief quartermaster of Fox on the British Franklin Search Expedition, 1857-1859 (leader Francis Leopold McClintock), a private expedition sponsored by Jane, Lady Franklin and public subscription to search in the area of King William Island for relics of Franklin's expedition.
