Van Deman was promoted to Captain in 1901 and assigned to the head of the Military Intelligence Division at Manila, Philippines. He was sent to Tientsin, China in 1906 for the Military Intelligence Division. In 1915 he was detailed to the General Staff Corps and assigned to the War College Division. He was assigned to organize a Military Intelligence Branch for the Army in May 1917. He was promoted to Colonel, and assigned to the G-2 Division of General Pershing's staff in Europe. In 1919 he was assigned to Counter- Intelligence for the Paris Peace Conference.
