United States. Board of Inquiry on the Labor Disputes Involving the Non-ferrous Metals Industry.
Biographical notes:
This Board of Inquiry was created by President Harry S. Truman on August 30, 1951, according to powers granted to him in the national emergencies section of the Taft-Hartley Act. The purpose of the Board was to report on the disputes involved in industry-wide strikes in the copper and non-ferrous metals industry.
The parties involved in the disputes included the Anaconda Copper Corporation, the Kennecott Copper Corporation, the Phelps Dodge Corporation, and twenty-one zinc and lead mines in the Coeur D'Alene District of Idaho and the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers International Union and the Building Trades Council of the American Federation of Labor. The issues in dispute were wage rates, position reclassification, pensions, and fringe benefits. The major parties agreed on the essentials of a settlement prior to the issuance of the Board's reports.
