With its headquarters located in Akron, the OEC was responsible for providing services to 569 rural communities and 22 municipalities. The OEC continued to expand until its final merger with the Pennsylvania Power Company, Centerior Energy Corp. and its subsidiaries, the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, and the Toledo Edison Company to become the FirstEnergy Corporation in 1996.
