Film Council of America
Biographical notes:
Non-profit educational organization. The Council was established in January 1946 as a continuation of the wartime National 16mm Advisory Committee, through the efforts of seven constituent organizations: the Allied Non-Theatrical Film Association, American Library Association, Educational Film Library Association (EFLA), Department of Audio-Visual Instruction (DAVI) of the National Education Association, National Association of Visual Education Dealers, National University Extension Association, and Visual Equipment Manufacturers Council. The purpose of the organization, as stated in its constitution, was to "work toward the general welfare of all people by fostering, improving, and promoting the production, the distribution and the effective use of audio-visual materials." In addition to publishing a monthly newsletter, Film Counselor, the Council sponsored the annual Golden Reel Festival and worked with film producers, sponsors, distributors, national organizations, community program planners, and local film councils until its demise in 1958.
