Walter Barlow Stevens was born in Meriden, Conn., on July 25, 1848. While still in his youth, his family moved to Peoria, Ill. In 1870, Stevens graduated from the University of Michigan. Soon thereafter, he went to work as a journalist for St. Louis newspapers; first the St. Louis Daily Times, then the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. He worked primarily as a correspondent in Washington, D.C. When not covering politics in Washington, Stevens spent time on his farm in Morris County, Kan.
