Al Vine designed and constructed instruments. He redesigned the bathyterhmograph (BT). This work was used in anti-submarine warfare. He worked on underwater acoustics projects, deep water mooring, submersibles and motherships.

Physicist and oceanographer. On the scientific staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1940 until his death. Research interests included submarines, World War II Fleet boat work, bathythermographs (BT) and other instruments, and underwater sound work relating to detection/evasion of enemy ships during World War II. Best known for his involvement with the design and construction of Alvin, the first U.S. deep-diving research submersible, and for his work with BT for which the Navy belatedly honored him in 1972.
