Biographical notes:

Established by House Bill 1409 in the 72nd Illinois General Assembly, in order to promote an exposition in observance of the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, with Reprsentative Corneal Davis acting as Chairman of the Commission. An Exposition at McCormick Place in Chicago was planned as a final observance of the centennial. Artist Margaret Burroughs was in charge of selecting 50 paintings, by various artists, depicting Lincoln and his relationship with African Americans and the historical and cultural achievments of African Americans.
