Earl James McGrath was born on November 16, 1902 in Buffalo, New York. He received his B.A. in 1928 and M.A. in 1930 from the University of Buffalo. From 1928 to 1942 he served as a faculty member and administrator at the University of Buffalo, and he also served as an educational consultant in 1930. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1936. McGrath served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves during World War II. He was in charge of educational services, Bureau of Naval Personnel, 1942-1944. On May 12, 1944, he married Dorothy Ann Leemon. After the war, McGrath served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, University of Iowa, 1945-1948. He went on to serve in the following capacities: Member of the President's Commission on Higher Education, 1946-1947; Professor at the University of Chicago, 1948-1949; U.S. Commissioner of Education, Office of Education, Federal Security Agency, 1949-1953; President and Chancellor of the University of Kansas City, 1953-1956; Executive Officer at the Institute on Higher Education and professor at the Teachers College, Columbia University, 1956-1968; Chancellor of Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, 1966-1968; Director of the Higher Education Center, Temple University, 1968-1973; Senior Consultant at the Lilly Endowment, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1973-1976; Professor at the University of Arizona, 1974-1980; and Chairman of the university advisory council, Western International University, Phoenix, 1978-1993. McGrath was also a member of the advisory board for the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library. Earl James McGrath died on January 14, 1993, in Tucson, Arizona.
