Ernst Busch (b. July 6, 1885, Steele, Kreis Essen, Germany-d. July 17, 1945, Camp Aldershot near London. England), Field Marshal, entered the Prussian Army in 1904 and served on the Western Front during World War I. He remained in the Army and participated in the invasion of Poland in 1939 and led his 16th Army in the siege of Leningrad. He commanded Army Group Centre in 1943 and 1944, but after the disastrous defeat of June 1944, Hitler replaced him. He was recalled in March 1945 and became head of Army Group Northwest, charged with the assignment to halt the advance of Field Marshal Montgomery and the Allies into Germany. Busch surrendered to Montgomery in May 1945 and died as a prisoner of war the following July.
