Biographical notes:

John Franklin Smith and his sister Mary operated a ranch in Texas, traveling to Mexico to trade livestock and to Mississippi and Louisiana to visit family in 1859.

During the Civil War, John served in the Confederate Army, residing in Galveston, Texas, near the end of the war.
