John Henry Faber was born on 13 February 1918 in New York City, New York, to John Martin and Jennie F. Faber. He studied journalism at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, from 1937 until 1941. While at the University, he worked for the UA News Bureau and freelanced for The Birmingham News (Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama). In 1941, he left the University and entered the United States Army Air Corps. After leaving the Air Corps, he remained in Alabama as Director of Photography for The Birmingham News and its television station, WAFM-TV.
In 1950, Faber accepted a position as Technical Sales Representative for the Eastman Kodak Company, based in New York City. He remained in that position until he retired in 1983 and received many awards during that time.
Faber married Gertrud “Trudie” Margot on 26 October 1964 and the couple had seven children. He wrote five books including Great Moments in News Photography (1960), Humor in News Photography (1961), and Great News Photos and the Stories Behind Them (1978). Faber died on 20 June 1993.
