Born in Blenheim, S.C., Rogers was editor of the Florence Morning News for 23 years. He was a founder of Francis Marion College and its predecessor, the University of South Carolina at Florence, and the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics. He served as chair of the trustee boards of the South Carolina State Library, South Carolina State College, Coker College, and the State College Board for Francis Marion College, College of Charleston, and Lander College. He was a member of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He served on various community task forces, committees, and civic groups, and received numerous honors. He wrote five books of local history and biography.
