Thomas Hart was one of the organizers of the Transylvania Company, dedicated to the establishment of settlements and commerce within pioneer Kentucky. He aided in the negotiation of the treaty through which the company purchased parts of Virginia and North Carlona and the greater portions of Kentucky and Tennessee from the Cherokees for approximately 10,000 pounds sterling. Hart was connected with Kentucky's most prominent families. His daughter, Lucretia, married Henry Clay and his niece, Susanna Hart, married Isaac Shelby.
