Produce commission merchant on Buffalo's Central Wharf. Served as weighmaster for the Buffalo Board of Trade from 24 May 1870-1884, and for the Buffalo Merchants' Exchange, 1884-1903. He was then named lake weighmaster, which continued under the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce. In 1906, the Corn Exchange of Buffalo took over the management of the grain business, and Smith served as lake weighmaster for that body.
