US War Department, Military Intelligence Division, (MID)

Biographical notes:

The Military Intelligence Division was established in the War Department in 1918. It became one of the five General Staff divisions in 1921 and was assigned the additional designation of "G-2." One function of the MID was the maintenance of information files on foreign countries. Documents for the files were collected from a variety of sources in various parts of the world. After the entry of the US into World War II, the sources expanded to included the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the Office of Censorship, and intelligence agencies of other Allied countries.
