Author, Confederate army officer, and mathematics professor, The Citadel (1845-1854), Davidson College (1854-1860), and Mt. Zion Institute; appointed president (1869), Laurens Female College; imprisoned, 1872, on suspicion of membership in Klu Klux Klan; native of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and son of Aaron W. Leland (1787-1871).
