Biographical notes:

Prior to the appointment of the first full-time Registrar in 1905, the Secretary of the College of Arts and Sciences was responsible for the registration of students in their classes and for recording grades. These duties remained central to the office during the tenures of Flora Wolcott (1905-29), Donald M. Love (1929-38), and Edith Stanley (1935-55). Following Stanley was a succession of registrars who were more and more concerned to automate the office and make it a data-gathering center to increase research on college enrollment trends. From 1963 to 1969, the Registrar's Office joined Admissions in the Office of Admissions and Academic Records. In 1973, Robert Lodington Jackson (d. 1989) became Registrar, serving until 1981 when Douglass S. Gardner became Registrar. The post of Dean of Enrollment Planning was created in 1987 to oversee the work of the offices of Admissions, Registrar and Financial Aid.
