Davidson College. President (1855-1860 : Lacy)
Biographical notes:
Drury Lacy, 1802-1884, was Davidson College's third president, serving from 1855 to 1860. During his years as president, Davidson received a bequest from North Carolina businessman Maxwell Chambers and the college constructed the Chambers Building. In 1860 Lacy left Davidson to continue ministerial work and served as chaplain in the Forty-seventh Regiment. After the Civil War, he returned to Raleigh, NC and with his wife, Mary Ritchie Rice Lacy, operated a female school, the Peace Institute.
