Edward Allan Frieman was appointed eighth director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography UCSD, UCSD Vice Chancellor of Marine Science and Dean of Marine Sciences on July 1, 1986 by UCSD Chancellor Richard C. Atkinson. He retired as director on August 31, 1996.
