George Frederic Oheim was born in Bavaria (Germany) on 1865 May 7. According to the 1900 census, he immigrated to the United States in 1880. He married Amy Lou Bell in 1884; the couple had five children: Monroe, Oscie, Joseph, Annie Lou, and Frederic.

George Oheim was working as a teacher at the Watson School in New Braunfels, Texas, when he bought out a partner of the New Braunfels Zeitung, a German-language newspaper, and assumed the editorship on 1899 August 3. He remained in this position until he became ill in 1941, at which time his son took over as editor. George Frederic Oheim died on 1947 June 5. His son Frederic took over ownership of the paper in 1948 after the death of his father’s partner.
