Biographical notes:
Lanier was born in Beaufort County, N.C. He studied law and moved to Indiana with his family. Settling in Madison, he practiced law and eventually became a banker. He was one of the founders and largest stockholder of the State Bank of Indiana. In 1849 he moved to New York and continued his financial career; several times he lent money to the state of Indiana during the Civil War. Lanier's house in Madison, Ind. is an historic site.
