Oberlin College. Office of the Secretary
Biographical notes:
In 1899 the position of Secretary of the College was created to alleviate the demands on the time of the Treasurer, who served as Secretary-Treasurer up to that time. The new position was filled by George M. Jones (1870-1948) and involved handling correspondence, distributing catalogs, and keeping College records. Jones was made secretary for the Board of Trustees and the Prudential Committee, keeping minutes and records of meetings. Duties gradually expanded under Jones. He served as chairman of the Committee on Admissions until the creation of an admissions office in 1928. Jones retired in 1938, and was succeeded by Donald M. Love (1908- 1979). Love's retirement in 1962 coincided with a major administrative overhaul as outlined in 1961 by the Board of Trustees in the Gladieux Report. From 1962 to 1983 the position was scaled back considerably from the once powerful position held by Jones and Love. The Secretary was restored to full-time status in 1983 by Oberlin College President S. Frederick Starr.
