Hedley Marston was born in South Australia, and educated at the University of Adelaide and Cambridge. He was foundation fellow and first treasurer of the Australian Academy of Science and was Chief of the Division of Biochemistry and General Nutrition, CSIRO.

Foundation Fellow and first Treasurer of the Australian Academy of Science and Chief of the Division of Biochemistry and General Nutrition, CSIRO. Hedley Marston (born at Bordertown on 26 August 1900) initially studied chemistry at the University of Adelaide but transferred to biochemistry under the influence of Professor T. Brailsford Roberston. He was a demonstrator in Biochemistry and closely associated with Robertson in the department from 1919, and joined the Division of Animal Nutrition under Robertson soon after it was established in 1927. His major research was in the fields of ruminant energy metabolism and thermodynamics of food utilization.
Shirley Allen was a science student at the University of Adelaide and joined the staff of C.S.I.R.O. She worked closely with Marston, and after his early death concentrated on preparing his experimental data on the effects of Vitamin B12 and cobalt deficiency for publication.
