Biographical notes:

This collection has a strong component of Territorial history. During the Territorial years of 1854 through 1861, William Hutchinson was a special correspondent for the New York Times. Letters to and from such persons as Joseph Root, George Washington Brown, W.W. Updegraff, Charles Robinson, Andrew H. Reeder, Henry J. Adams, Augustus Wattles, and Jacob Collamer, are found in the papers. Subjects such as Free State objectives, abolitionism, Lecompton, Lawrence, the New England Emigrant Aid Society, the Free State Vigilance Club, and relief from pro slavery forces located in Missouri and all dealt with.
