Author Henry Kingsley was born in the Northamptonshire village of Barnack, in a family including accomplished brothers Charles and George; although popular and athletic, Henry left Oxford without taking a degree, and spent some four years in the Australian goldfields before returning to England. Perhaps inspired by Charles' success, Henry wrote a popular novel based on his experiences in Australia, The Recollections of Geoffry Hamblyn, which became a minor Australian classic. Subsequent novels were not as well-received. He also worked as a journalist, but is chiefly remembered for his early works set in Australia.
