Mary Krumboltz Hurd received her B.S. in Engineering from Iowa State University in 1947. During the period 1947 through 1976, she was employed by the American Concrete Institute as an associate editor and staff engineer. During the remainder of that 30-year period, her time was spent in consulting work; graduate study at the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois; and in attending to family responsibilities.
In 1976 she began working as an engineering writer and consultant, preparing technical reports and programs for companies and individuals. In 1981 she became the editor-in-chief of Concrete Construction and later the senior engineering editor. She is a member of numerous societies and organizations, including the Society for Technical Communication, the American Society of Civil Engineers (Life Member), Tau Beta Pi, and is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute. She also received the Henry C. Turner Medal from the American Concrete Institute in March of 1995.
