Biographical notes:

Engineering professor. Herbert J. Gilkey (1890-1976) received a degree from Oregon State University (1911), a B.S. (1916) from MIT, and an S.B. from Harvard. He was employed with the Pennsylvania Railroad until he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the American Relief Administration during World War I. He then worked for the Lord Engineering Company (1919-1921) on reinforced concrete design, the University of Illinois (1921-1923) where he also received an M.S. degree, and from 1923-1931, was a member of the Civil Engineering Dept. at the University of Colorado.

In 1931 he was brought to Iowa State University to organize and head the Dept. of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, a position he held until 1955. Gilkey received many honors and published over 150 articles. During the 1930s he served as a board member on concrete problems of Hoover Dam, and was also honored with several awards by the Iowa Engineering Society, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
