Biographical notes:

Ernest Staples Osgood was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on October 29, 1888, the son of John C. and Eveline H. Osgood. He graduated from Dartmouth College. From 1914 to 1924 he was a teacher at Helena High School in Helena, Montana. Osgood was hired in 1927 as a history professor at the University of Minnesota. He wrote Day of the Cattleman in 1929. In 1964 he edited Field Notes of Captain William Clark, 1803-1805, published by Yale University Press. He retired to Wooster, Ohio, where he died on June 22, 1983.
