Stringer Lawrence (1697-1775), army officer in the East India Company, began his military career as an ensign in Clayton's regiment (later the 14th foot) at Gibraltar on 22 December 1727. After twenty years, Lawrence resigned the king's service and was given a major's commission by the East India Company in 1746 to command its forces at Madras, with whom he remained for almost twenty years. His success in this role led to his later moniker "the father of the Indian Army."
