Montgomery (Ala.) Fire Dept.

Dates:
Active 1918
Active 1977

Biographical notes:

Like many fire departments in other towns and cities, the Montgomery Fire Department finds its roots in several volunteer fire companies. The first records of a fire company in Montgomery, Ala., is the Old Dexter Fire company in 1847. It was not until July 15, 1898, that a paid fire deparment was established and the city's first modern fire equipment was installed. The department rapidly grew to accomodate the needs of Montgomery.
