Peter Cormack Sutherland was born in 1822. He was appointed surgeon in HMS Sophia on the British Franklin Search Expedition, 1850-1851 (leader William Penny), instructed to search for Franklin's missing expedition in Jones Sound and Wellington Channel and in the unexplored region beyond Cape Walker, Barrow Strait. His journal of the expedition was published in 1852. He returned to the Arctic in 1852 as surgeon in Isabel on the British Franklin Search Expedition (leader Edward Inglefield), sponsored by Lady Franklin and by public subscription to search for Franklin in Jones Sound and along the west coast of Baffin Bay and Davis Strait. After the expedition, Sutherland was appointed surveyor general of Natal in 1855. He died in 1900.
