A native of Piqua, Ohio, Lucius W. Chapman enlisted as chaplain to the 110th Ohio Infantry Regiment in March, 1864, but left the army within two months due to homesickness and urgent illness in his family. Most of his brief service was spent in northern Virginia, between Washington, D.C., and Culpeper County. He had little direct experience with combat.
