North Carolina State University. Dept. of Mathematics.

Biographical notes:

Mathematics courses have been taught at NCSU since classes were first held in 1889. J. H. Kinealy was the first professor of mathematics and practical mechanics. In 1906, the Mathematics Department at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College, later North Carolina State University) was founded. The department consisted of Robert E. Lee Yates, who became the first department head, and three instructors--Carroll L. Mann, John A. Park, and Michael Richardson.

In 1928, the Mathematics Department moved to the Engineering School. The department remained in the School of Engineering until 1960 when it joined with the Chemistry, Physics, and Experimental Statistics departments to form the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics. The school became the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1987.
