Biographical notes:
Roberto Clemente was born in Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934. He relocated to the mainland United States in 1954 after playing two years of Puerto Rican baseball. After a short stint with the Montreal Royals, he was singed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. While on the Pirates he experienced racism from teammates and media. In 1958, Clemente joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve; he was a private first class in the Marine Corps Reserve until September 1964. While on a charity mission to deliver aid to Nicaragua after an earthquake, the plane Clemente was on crashed on December 31, 1972. Since 1971, Major League Baseball has presented the Roberto Clemente Award every year to a player with outstanding baseball playing skills who is personally involved in community work.
